I think that most people would agree that shoes bought on Black Friday are a bad deal. They’re a retail “loss leader”–the store doesn’t expect to make its money back from selling shoes, but from getting you into the store, where you’ll buy other stuff. The sale prices are chosen to get people in the door, not to save them money once they’re there.
But if the shoes don’t make money for the store, why do they bother? Because Black Friday has become one of those things that everyone expects. You have to wait for it or be left out, and everyone else will have a better choice than you if you don’t go. Maybe you won’t save much money on shoes this year, but next year at this time all your friends will be thinking about how well last year’s Black Friday shoes were.
The best Black Friday shoe deals I’ve seen so far are at Nordstrom’s, which will be running a “3 for $100” sale on select brands, including Donald J Pliner and UGG. This is actually a pretty good deal, since Donald J Pliner shoes retail for $225 and up, and UGG boots go for $200 and up.
